French 19th Century Rat de Cave Candlestick

A lovely late 18th or early 19th french candlestick, known as a ‘Rat de Cave’ candlestick.

These were used to light 18th & 19th Century burgundy cellars. The rat tail like handle were designed to hang on the edge of barrels.

It has a spiralling lifter to control the height of the candle.

These antique candlesticks work beautifully even now. Made from a wooden base & a wrought iron spiral case.
